Adios, Staff!
We Bid Bucs Goodbye

At the end of this year, Mission Bay seniors won’t be the only ones leaving the school, but some teachers as well. The teachers who will be retiring this year are Ms. Sally Richards, Ms. Ileana Pelaez, Mr. Mike Seaman, Mr. Tom Hetherington, Mr. Jerry Surdy, and Mr. Steve Scott.
“I have been a teacher for ten years at Mission Bay High,” says Ms. Richards, the special Ed teacher. “I will miss all of my regular Ed students and my special Ed students, but I won’t miss pushing wheelchairs through the hall when the classes are changing.”
“I have been teaching for 18 years.” “I will miss the relationships that I develop with my students,” comments Ms. Pelaez. The Spanish teacher, Ms. Pelaez, has planned to celebrate by spending time in Paris.
“I have been a teacher for 37 years, I will miss the faculty, some of the students, and woodshop,” says Mr. Hetherington. “I won’t miss the bell schedule and students who will do the bare minimum to pass.”
Mr. Seaman, the teacher of the year and a P.E. coach, has been a teacher at Mission Bay for 37 years, he comments on the time he has been at Mission Bay. “I will miss the interaction with students and faculty as well as friends I have made.” Mr. Seaman also comments on how the school has changed since his first year here. “The biggest change was when cycling, water skiing, canoeing, bowling, scuba diving, rock climbing, and fencing no longer became part of P.E. In my first year there was eight P.E. staff instead of three as well.” Mr. Seaman plans on going to Vancouver Island for a vacation and to kayak with killer whales.
Mr. Surdy, algebra teacher, has been a teaching over 35 years. He comments on the time he has been at Mission Bay; “I’ll miss the students who come here every day to get smarter and I’ll miss the friendships I’ve made with the teachers, but I won’t miss this schedule that is determined by the bell.”
Mr. Scott is the photography and graphic arts teacher and he also prints The Beachcomber. He has been a teacher at Mission Bay for 29 years and is one of the hardest working teachers at Mission Bay. “I’ll miss the students and the faculty.” “I’ve enjoyed working with the faculty,” says Mr. Scott.
These teachers are hard working and have always dedicated their time to their students. Mission Bay High School will surely miss them.
