Nicolette
Shines

Freshman Nicolette Rice was chosen as Scholar of the Week for her outstanding academic performance holding down a 3.75.
Currently taking seminar world history with Mr. Sam Sample, advanced physics with Mr. George Zilinsky ,seminar algebra 2 and geometry with Mr. Gualter Moura and P.E. with Coach Richard Frink.
“Nicolette is a great student. She works hard and always tries to do her best,” Mr. Moura comments. Nicolette enjoys her classes, especially fourth period. “My classes are difficult mainly seminar world history and advanced physics, but I still try my best”. Nicolette tells us.
Nicolette is on the swim and volleyball team. Nicolette says the swim team is really fun. She also enjoyed the volleyball team and is planning on joining the swim and volleyball team next year. She considers some of her teammates as family and some just really good friends.

Eric Excels

Junior Eric Mondragon was chosen as Scholar of the Week, an outstanding student at Mission Bay High with a 3.5 GPA. He has biology with Mr. William Mellman, IB English with Mr. John Villareal, IB History and IB support with Mr. Barry Dancher, and PE with Coach Joseph Panian.
Eric has been playing for Mission Bay’s soccer team since his sophomore year, and is currently on the varsity squad. Eric finds his classes pretty challenging at times, but it serves him good since it helps him learn and grow.
“My classes are very enjoyable, especially when you have funny teachers like Mr. Dancher and Mr. Moura to teach you a joke or two,” Eric mentions.
“Eric is an outstanding student, respected by peers and teachers alike,” Mr. William Mellman mentions.

Viet Le Vies for Excellence

Viet Le, senior, is an outstanding student at Mission Bay High with a 4.0 GPA. He is taking IB Biology, IB English, IB Math, IB Psychology, IB French. Viet is also in Key Club, Avid Club, and National Honor Society. Viet says having seven classes and being in clubs is hard, but it is fun to juggle all of it together.
He feels taking seven classes takes hard work and dedication but it’s worth it. He enjoys the challenges he faces. “ I am impressed with Viet’s dedication and work ethic. It is a pleasure to have him in my class,” Ms. Tracy Borg mentions. Viet Le’s advice is “Work hard and don’t procrastinate.”

Amy Aims High

Amy Ratliff, junior, was chosen to be the scholar of the week. Last term she took IB biology, IB English, IB US history, French 3/4, and design mix media. “I really enjoyed my classes. At times I found them really challenging, but in the end the good grades were very rewarding,” says Amy.
We asked Ms. Heather Henkes, who teaches design mix media, about Amy Ratliff. “She is an excellent student, a critical thinker, sweet and kind, and overall a good kid.”
We also asked Ms. Susan Todd, who teaches business tech, and she said: “Amy is an exceptional student whose coconscious about doing her work and she always has a smile on her face.”
The most challenging class was English because it was hard to write a “perfect essay” and her favorite class was IB biology because she enjoyed the material and the class itself.
Amy adds, “I did a lot of homework and studying! It takes a lot of time and effort”. All her hard work and studying paid of for her when she received a GPA of 4.25.

Samuel Keeps Busy in Academics & Sports

Samuel Metu (junior) is a very successful student at Mission Bay High School, earning a 3.625 GPA for IB Biology, IB Support, IB History, Spanish 6. Samuel plays for the MB varsity football team, #22. Samuel also has track and field with Coach Emmitt Dodd.
He thinks his IB classes are really fun, even though you get a lot of homework. Taking six classes at the same time and still being on a team makes a lot of work for him, but he tries to do his best in every aspect of school.
Samuel says, “It’s really hard to have six classes and play football, but you really need to manage your time. You can’t slack off or you will get really behind.” He is really looking forward to graduate on the honor roll next year and make his future plans come true.
He hopes to be a pre-med and eventually a doctor. Mr. Jon Corbin (IB Biology) proudly says, “Samuel studies very hard for his IB Biology class and it reflects on his test scores.”

In Clubs, in Class, Micaela Shines

Micaela Cervantes is on her was to success holding down a 4.0 GPA, although only a freshman. According to Mr. Sam Sample, Micaela’s English teacher, “Micaela is a pleasure to have in the classroom, well liked by other students, willing to take chances on answers when she raises her hand to tough questions, yet doesn’t steal the spotlight away from other students.”
Micaela’s schedule is currently first period English with Mr. Sam Sample, second period geometry with Mr. James Loveday, third period Spanish with Ms. Jo Powell, and fourth period athletics with Mr. Jorge Palacios.
Micaela is following the footsteps of her older sister Ximena Cervantes who is currently in 2 IB classes and also has a high GPA at Mission Bay High.
There is more to Micaela than good grades. She is a representative to organizations such as Interact, soccer club, and hiking club. She is an accomplished, hard working and successful student who is on her way to be quite successful in the working world.

Star Senior Chase Bove

As a hard working student senior Chase Bove is working his way to the top holding down a 3.93 GPA, taking four IB classes, and playing center on the varsity football team.
Chase is currently taking first period, IB biology with Ms. Tamara Rasmussen and IB support academy also with Ms. Rasmuseen second period, IB English with Mr. Nathan Sheehy and IB history of the Americans with Mr. Joe Panian third period, Art history with Mr. Sam Sample and IB math with Mr. Gualter Moura.
“Being the center on the football team he handles the ball every play so he contributes a direct impact every play. He is very vocal and as a starter last year and coming back this year he shows real leadership with the younger kids”, says Coach Steve Matson “Chase defiantly has the skills and academically he will definitely have the grades to play college ball.”

David Get National Recognition

The Scholar of the Week is sophomore David T. Semelsberger. The NSHSS (National Society of High School Scholars) proudly announced that David Semelsberger has been selected for membership.
The NSHSS is a meeting in Washington DC involving kids from all over the United States. The ones that are chosen represent the potential leaders of the future. “I will be attending it in July, representing Mission Bay High School. It is a true honor and I hope to represent the school and myself greatly,” says David.
At the conference he will be visiting politicians and people and learning what it takes to become a leader.
David takes AP chemistry, computer CADD, honors pre-calculus, and PE (baseball), and maintains an overall GPA of 4.3. He is involved in varsity baseball. After high school he would like to attend college in California. He likes to play and watch sports. David tries to learn something new every day.

Berkeley Bound Simon Duong!

The Scholar of the Week is senior Simon Duong. Simon has maintained an overall GPA of 3.9 over the past four years.
His current schedule consists of AP Government with Mr. Barry Dancher, English with Mr. Brian Kerr, IB Math SL with Mr. Gualter Moura and IB Theory of Knowledge with Mr. Sam Sample, and Spanish 5-6 with Mrs. Ileana Pelaez. “Simon is very dedicated to his learning and always pushes himself to do his best,” states Mr. Moura. His favorite class would have to be IB Math because it challenges him in many ways, especially being taught by Mr. Moura.
During the four years at Mission Bay Simon has been involved in several clubs such as Key Club, CSF and National Honors Society. He is currently the Vice President of CSF and the President for Key Club. “It feels great being president of such a big club, probably the biggest in the school, with about 87 members,” states Simon.
Simon has also been in the badminton team for three years and was able to see the team go to CIF finals in his last year as a player. “He has kindness in his soul and a very cute personality,” says teammate Richard Quach.
In his free time, Simon likes to eat Chinese food, sleep, and listen to music and watch movies.
After graduation Simon will be attending UC Berkeley and plans to major in business administration.

Vanessa Galeana
Personally selected from Spanish teacher Mr. Luis Villanueva, sophomore Vanessa Galeana has shown much hard work and dedication to the ancestrial language of Spanish.
Vanessa is currently taking English and senior high AVID with Ms. Lanae Kallsen first period, computer art 1 with Ms. Marian Palmieri second period, AP world history with Mr. Joseph Panian third periodm and Spanish speakers 1,2 with Mr. Villanueva fourth period.
She is currently holding a 2.7 GPA. Her favorite class is art because she likes to draw and paint.
“I feel that I’ve been doing well in spanish, world history, and art,” Vanessa says, “I’m thankful to have Mr. Villanueva for a teacher.”
She hopes to pass her classes and to master any work that needs the help.
Vanessa likes to hang out with her friends, go to the beach and the mall, playing volleyball, and listening to music. She doesn’t have a favorite band, but she listens to music both in Spanish and English.
Vanessa’s favorite movie is Happy Feet, and she likes to read the Harry Potter series. She doesn’t play any sports, but she likes to watch badminton.

Sonya Novak

Sonya Novak, junior, has been chosen to be our Scholar of the Week. She is currently holding down a 4.5 GPA, and her favorite class is drama. She loves drama because it’s fun.
Sonya is currently taking six IB classes: first period is French with Ms. Christine Leidoff and biology with Ms. Abigail Murray; second period is English with Mr. Nathan Sheehy and History of the Americas with Ms. Margo Andara; third period is math with Mr. Gualtor Moura and Theory Of Knowledge (TOK) with Mr. Samual Sample.
“I like the A/B schedule because it gives us an extra day for homework,” comments Sonya, “I prefer AP classes because it gives you time to study, but I think that the IB program will help the school.”
Sonya plans on attending college, but she isn’t sure where she wants to go and what she would like to major in. “I think that the kids should take more art classes, because our school puts emphasis in academic classes that we can learn a lot from doing creative things,” says Sonya.
Here at Mission Bay, Sonya plays women’s varsity volleyball in the fall, and women’s varsity water polo during the winter. Sonya enjoys watching movies, going to the beach, bike riding, and hanging out with friends. Her favorite movies are Out Of Africa, Mean Girls, and Chocolat. Sonya also likes to listen to music. There is no particular band that is her favorite, but she listens to everything. Sonya loves to read the Harry Potter series and her favorite book is Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut.
Sonya hopes to achieve goals throughout the school year and hopes to improve the skills that need help.
