English

9th and 10th grade students are placed in one or two periods of English per day, based on their scores on the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test (SDRT). This test is administered during the month of February and an alternative assessment (IRI) may, under certain circumstances, be given again to students attending summer school. Students who, according to this test, read below or significantly below grade level and are placed in the two block period class. Students reading at or above grade level are placed in regular English 1,2 or in English cluster class.

Sheltered English classes are offered for students who have completed ESL but are still designated as English Language Learners.The following sheltered classes are available: English 1-4 Literacy Block, American Literature, and Contemporary Voices. These classes are taught by teachers who are trained to use specific strategies for English Language Learners. The curriculum covers the same material as the regular English Class.
