Health Office
Notes From the School Nurse
Welcome back to the NEW Year and 2008! With a new year, we all want
to commit to being healthier and fitter. We need to realize that old
habits are difficult to break; however, we can make small changes that
will add up to a healthier lifestyle. This will mean fewer illnesses
and missed opportunities. This will lead to better grades and a happier
you!
I welcome all students, parents, and staff to make an effort to be more active
and increase the numbers of healthy fruits and vegetables in their diet. Control
your portion sizes. Today’s portion sizes are often too oversized and
it is healthier to stop eating before you feel too full. Try eating slower.
Hopefully, everyone can make a resolution to do some type of aerobic activity
for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. You can do it in 10-minute increments if
time is a factor. This can include parking your car further so you walk more;
taking the steps in lieu of escalators or elevators. Limit TV watching and
video games 1-2 hours a day. Walk the dog often (good exercise for both of
you).
Parents should encourage their son/daughter to join sports at school. It is
an excellent way to help with self-esteem and be an active part of the school.
Students involved in sports maintain better grades and are ill less frequently.
