The (IB) International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
at Mission Bay High School

Mission Bay High School is pleased to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to our first class of juniors and look forward to expanding our program in the coming years. IB (International Baccalaureate) is an international academic high school program leading to the examinations for the International Baccalaureate diploma. The curriculum, considered the most rigorous high school curriculum in the world, is comprehensive and available to qualified candidates at high schools throughout the world. Based on the educational program of study of no single country, it represents the desire of the founders to provide students of different linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds with the intellectual, social and critical perspectives necessary for the adult world that lies ahead.

The International Baccaluareate Organization emphasizes:
• Flexible, yet comprehensive curriculum with rigorous international standards
• Unique approach to transdisciplinary learning using multiple instructional methodologies and teaching strategies
• Global focus with an emphasis on intercultural understanding
• Development of the whole child, including requirements for arts and community service

The young adults of today are faced with a bewildering variety of choices; it is essential, therefore, that their academic training provide them with the ideals and opportunities that will enable them to choose wisely. Learning how to learn has become as important as the learning of the disciplines themselves.

Among the goals of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program are:
• students will reach considered conclusions about people, their languages, and their literature
• students will understand the ways of humans in society and the scientific forces of their environment
• students will critically reflect upon the larger issues of international awareness
• students will be informed, tolerant, and willing to communicate readily with others on a range of topics about which they have already formed considered opinions as a result of having shared a common two-year experience with other young adults around the world.

The I.B. Diploma Program, with its three subjects at higher level and three at standard level, requires all participants to engage in the study of languages, sciences, mathematics, and humanities until the completion of their senior year. Students may also choose to receive IB certificates by testing in only certain IB areas of study. At Mission Bay course offerings include: IB Biology, IB History of the Americas, IB Math, IB English A1, IB French, IB Spanish B, Theory of Knowledge, and IB Psychology

The International Baccalaureate Program for Mission Bay High School and San Diego Unified School District endeavors to carry out the intentions of the International Baccalaureate Organization. Only schools officially approved by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) are authorized to offer the IB curriculum and to present candidates for examination. Students who earn the IB Diploma are awarded advanced standing at universities throughout the world. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for course credits. The following statement was issued by University of California admissions officers:

“…The breath and depth of the IB program, the curriculum, provides us at the Admissions Office with a kind of information and assurance that students have done the work that we expect of them in the academic area. Not only that, they exhibit the potential of doing very well at our institution; that’s what we try to assess in the admission evaluation process. In short, what is in the program of IB, the emphasis on the linkages between the disciplines being studied…” (UC Admissions, 2003).

With the authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to its students, Mission Bay High School has also revamped its magnet focus to serve students interested in a rigorous academic program with an international focus. The NEW MBHS Global Studies and Technology Magnet offers students a choice of three interdisciplinary pathways: Earth Systems, Arts and Humanities, and Communications Technology. It is a very exciting time to be a student at Mission Bay!
