Meeting #3
Dear Class of 2008,
Participation in Senior Exhibition has been a tradition for
students in the San Diego Unified School District for many, many
years. In fact, I understand that Mission Bay High School students
actually piloted the very first Senior Exhibition in the district---before
the Board of Education mandated that all seniors successfully
complete Senior Exhibition as a graduation requirement. The faculty
of each high school in the district is responsible for designing
Senior Exhibition for their students. Consequently, the process
looks a bit different from school to school.
After using the same portfolio and process for Senior Exhibition
at Mission Bay High School for the past twelve years, representative
members of the faculty have simplified the portfolio requirements
this year and streamlined the process and timeline to make the
experience more relevant and meaningful for students.
o Forty hours of community service continues to be a required component. If
you have not already done so, please begin to schedule your hours of service.
(You will receive guidelines for selecting these volunteer opportunities.)
o There are fewer required pieces in the Portfolio this year.
We have added, however, a written reflection (two pages typed)
which allows you to look back on your years at Mission Bay, commenting
on your four-year academic transcript as well as on your senior
year attendance record.
o This year’s presentation will not include a power point
presentation but, instead, students will participate in a formal
twenty minute interview with the panel. You will be given in
advance a list of the questions that may be asked so that you
can practice with your mentor for this interview.
o Senior Exhibition is a demonstration of each student’s
ability to organize and produce his or her own work. Nonetheless,
adult mentoring is a valuable support for students in polishing
their portfolios and preparing for the actual presentation. All
certificated faculty will serve as mentors this year, along with
classified staff members who choose to volunteer. Mentors are
limited to three mentees each. Students will have an opportunity
to select their mentors through December 10, 2007. This mentoring
support, however, will be more structured than in recent years.
Mentors will meet with mentees formally three times on designated
days during prep periods. Mentors may also schedule additional
meeting times for individual students needing more support.
From past experience, I know that the Senior Exhibition will
be one of the most memorable events of your senior year. Take
advantage of the support of your teachers and other faculty members
as you prepare to do your very best in Senior Exhibition!

Graduation Requirements
There are Four requirements
necessary to complete the graduation requirement. If these steps
are NOT completed, you will not receive a diploma or be allowed
to participate in graduation. The Senior Exhibition requirement
includes:
1. Community Service Hours.
40 hours of service.
2. Autobiographical Essay of Introduction
This portfolio piece will be completed as a graded assignment in senior level
English classes.
3. Four Best Works
Seniors will include a "Best Work" representing quality work which
meets grade-level standards in each of four categories (see "Guidelines.")
Students will be provided individual files in the Career Center to store portfolio
pieces for safe-keeping.
4. Personal Reflection on Academic Experience at Mission
Bay High
This two page (typed, double spaced) essay will reflect
on an attached copy of student's high school transcript and senior
year attendance record. (This piece will be discussed at Mentor
Meeting #2)
NOTE: Each student will be given a Senior Exhibition
binder, table of contents, and separators for organizing portfolios
(Mentor Meeting #2.) Students will not use plastic
sheet covers this year for portfolio pieces. This year's portfolio
cover will be designed by senior students in a contest this spring.
